PSD Thumbnails Not Showing in Windows 11? Why and What Works

By refernLast updated October 20267 min read

Windows File Explorer does not show PSD thumbnails on its own. Adobe Community Experts say this has been true for at least 20 years, so it is not new to Windows 11 and it applies to Windows 10 too. You see a plain icon until you add a thumbnail codec or app, or until you view the files in an app that can read PSDs itself.

We found no official Microsoft or Adobe help page that says this, so treat it as the long-standing advice of experts on Adobe's forums rather than a rule from Microsoft.

A few terms first

A thumbnail is the small picture File Explorer shows in place of a file icon.

A thumbnail handler (often called a codec) is a small add-on that tells Windows how to read one file type and draw its thumbnail. Windows has these for JPG and PNG, but not for PSD.

A composite (also called a merged or flattened image) is one picture of the whole canvas, with all visible layers combined. Photoshop can save this picture inside the PSD, next to the layers.

Rule out a Windows setting

First, make sure Windows is allowed to show thumbnails at all. If your JPG files also show plain icons, this is the likely cause.

  1. In File Explorer, open the View menu and pick Medium, Large, or Extra large icons. Microsoft's steps are written for these icon sizes.
  2. Select the ellipsis (...), then Options.
  3. On the View tab, clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  4. Select Apply, then OK. Restart your computer if thumbnails still do not appear.

These steps come from Microsoft's support page. If JPGs now show thumbnails but PSDs still do not, the missing piece is a PSD handler.

If PSD thumbnails used to work and now show blank or old pictures, clearing the Windows thumbnail cache is a common next step. Go to Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, check Thumbnails, and remove those files. Windows makes new thumbnails the next time you open the folder.

Why the Photoshop setting matters

Adobe Community Experts say thumbnail codecs usually read the composite image that Photoshop saved in the file, not your layers. They give this reason when people ask why a codec shows nothing.

Photoshop saves that image only when a setting allows it. The setting is Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility, and it lives in the File Handling section of Photoshop's preferences. On Windows, that is Edit > Preferences > File Handling. On a Mac, open the Photoshop menu and look under Preferences (newer versions may call it Settings), then File Handling.

It has three choices:

  • Always saves a flattened image along with the layers.
  • Ask asks you each time you save.
  • Never saves only the layers.

Adobe says the composite lets other apps read the file. It also says Never makes files smaller and saves time, but older apps may then be unable to open your files. For thumbnails, Always is the safe choice.

There is one catch. An old community bug report, first posted in 2014 and retested in 2018, says that switching to Always and pressing Save did not add the composite to a file saved with Never, while Save As did. This is a user report, not an Adobe statement, and we do not know whether current versions still behave this way. Still, Save As is the safer route for old files.

The 16-bit report from March 2026

On March 29, 2026, a user posted on the Adobe Community forum that 16-bit PSDs saved in Photoshop 27.4.0 showed no thumbnail in Windows 11, while an 8-bit test file still did.

Community Experts replied that Photoshop has never included a File Explorer codec, so the codec comes from a third party. One expert said some codecs may have limits with 16-bit files. Another suggested checking that Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility is set to Always. The thread does not settle whether 27.4.0 changed anything. So if only your 16-bit files lost their thumbnails, check that setting first, then ask your codec's maker about 16-bit support.

Your options for seeing PSD thumbnails

Add a third-party codec or Store app

Some third-party tools add PSD thumbnails to File Explorer. One example is Ardfry PSD Codec, which is paid after a 15-day trial. The Microsoft Store also lists apps such as PSD File Explorer Thumbnails, PSD Explorer Preview, and Art Thumbnails.

We have not tested these, and we do not recommend one over another. Before you install one, read its listing and check that it supports your Windows version, PSB files, and 16-bit files. Keep in mind that codecs usually need the composite image, so the Photoshop setting above still applies.

Use Adobe Bridge

Adobe offers Bridge, its file browser, for free, and it previews Photoshop files. You need an Adobe ID to use it. Adobe lists Windows 11 and macOS as supported systems, with no Linux version. If Bridge is slow or stops making thumbnails, see how to fix Adobe Bridge thumbnails that will not generate.

Use refern

refern is a desktop library for visual references and art files. Since version 1.10.1, it makes its own thumbnails for PSD and PSB files by reading the merged image saved inside the PSD with its own decoder. So it needs no Windows codec, and it works without Photoshop on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

You can open a file to see a larger flattened image and zoom in to check details. If you want to weigh other apps too, the Adobe Bridge alternatives guide compares a few.

See your PSDs in refern

refern works with normal folders and indexes your files where they are. It does not copy or convert them, and it does not change what is inside them.

  1. Add your art folder as a workspace. PSD and PSB files belong to the Design file type group, which new workspaces include by default.
  2. Turn on Design in an older workspace. Click the workspace name at the top of the left sidebar. Hover the workspace card and click the pencil, Edit workspace. Open File types shown, turn on Design, and click Save changes. refern then builds previews in the background.
  3. Open a file to zoom in. The viewer shows a larger flattened image of the whole canvas.
  4. Keep editing in Photoshop. Right-click a file and choose Open in default app.

You can also tag, rate, and group your PSDs, and find them by file name and tags. Type ext:psd in search to see only PSD files.

If a PSD shows "Low res"

refern relies on the same composite image that most codecs use. If a PSD was saved without Maximize compatibility, it has no full merged image. refern then shows the small thumbnail stored in the file, about 160 pixels across, and the grid marks it with a Low res label.

To fix it:

  1. In Photoshop, set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always.
  2. Save the file again. Save As is the safer choice, per the bug report above.
  3. In refern, right-click the file and choose Refresh preview. For many files, select them all first.

Notes for Mac readers

We found no Apple page that says whether Finder shows PSD thumbnails, so we will not promise how your Mac handles them. The Photoshop setting seems to matter on a Mac too. Mac users on Adobe's forums report that blank Finder previews came back once they set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always. refern's own PSD previews work the same way on a Mac as on Windows.

If you also use Krita

Krita offers a shell extension, an add-on that shows KRA thumbnails in File Explorer. Krita says it is included with the Windows installer. The portable version of Krita does not show these previews on its own, so you install the shell extension separately. refern also makes its own thumbnails for Krita files. For Clip Studio Paint files, read why Clip Studio Paint thumbnails are not showing.

What refern does not do

  • It shows one flattened picture. It does not show layers, let you turn them on or off, or edit the file.
  • PSD files cannot go on a refern canvas, because only images and videos can. Export a PNG or JPG from Photoshop if you want one on a canvas.
  • Search finds PSDs by file name and tags, not by what is painted in them.
  • For other file types, such as Illustrator files, refern shows the preview your system provides, if there is one. After you install an app that adds previews, go to Settings > General > File Previews and click Retry.

Once your thumbnails show up, a clear folder plan helps you find the right file faster. See how to organize digital art files.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Windows 11 not show PSD thumbnails?

Adobe Community Experts say File Explorer has not shown PSD thumbnails on its own for at least 20 years, and that Photoshop has never included a File Explorer codec. Thumbnails appear only after you add a third-party codec or thumbnail app. We found no official Microsoft or Adobe page that states this.

Does Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility make files bigger?

Yes. Adobe says that choosing Never reduces file size and saves time, but stops older apps from opening your files. With Always, Photoshop saves a flattened copy of the image next to the layers, so the file grows.

Do I need Photoshop installed to see PSD thumbnails in refern?

No. refern 1.10.1 and later reads PSD and PSB files with its own decoder on Windows, macOS, and Linux. You need Photoshop only to edit the file.

Can refern show the layers in a PSD?

No. refern shows one flattened picture of the whole canvas. It does not show layers, let you turn them on or off, or edit the file. Use Open in default app to keep working in Photoshop.

Why does my PSD show a Low res label in refern?

The file has no full merged image, so refern shows the small thumbnail stored inside it. Set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always in Photoshop, save the file again with Save As, then right-click it in refern and choose Refresh preview.
