Kuadro, PureRef, and refern: Which Reference Window Workflow Fits?

Kuadro’s official page describes independent image windows and saved layouts, but current downloads and build provenance remain unresolved. PureRef is the clearer documented choice for a project board; refern adds a persistent searchable library.

Separate windows are a distinct idea

Kuadro’s vendor page describes opening images in separate windows and saving their arrangement. That can appeal to someone who wants references distributed across a desktop rather than composed in one board. This is a description of the official page, not a hands-on finding from a currently verified binary. PureRef offers a documented scene workflow

PureRef has a canvas with image arrangement, groups, notes, drawing, and overlay controls. Its official download page lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. Personal non-commercial downloads allow a custom amount including zero; commercial users should check the appropriate license. It is a strong choice when a project board is all you need. Source

refern adds folders, tags, search, canvases, and a relationship graph in one workspace. That matters when finding a reference from an older project is as important as displaying the current one. PureRef keeps scene-level organization; its handbook does not document a library-wide tag database or cross-board search. Source

Storage does not guarantee safety

PureRef embeds local images by default but can link existing disk paths. Back up each scene and any linked media. refern’s existing-folder model also requires backups of media and application data. Neither a plain file nor a database format is immune to loss, and the storage format alone is not a reliability comparison. Source

Try one project before migrating

refern combines local folder indexing, a searchable reference library, an infinite canvas, and a relationship graph. Normal indexing leaves source media in place and creates application data; explicit imports and file actions can create or modify files. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, but window transparency and clickthrough controls are not available on Linux.

Use a copied sample that includes your usual file types and metadata. Check previews, search, canvas placement, and a saved-and-reopened project. Keep original catalogs and backups until the result is verified. A successful thumbnail scan is not proof that every source field, relationship, or edit transferred.
