Decision guide

How is this different from a photo catalog?

refern organizes photographs as creative reference material beside images, clips, and canvases. It is not a RAW developer or photography editing suite.

Good fit when

  • You shoot or save photos mainly to support creative work.
  • Photo references should mix with other visual research.

Consider another tool when

  • You need RAW processing, lens correction, or print workflows.
  • You need face recognition and camera-ingest automation.

Format boundary
Images, including AVIF, and videos receive native handling. PDFs can be enabled for a first-page preview and native viewer; most other optional formats are generic, name-searchable entries.
Search
Find files by text, tags, or color. Use search filters, look for similar images, or find copies of the same image.
Canvas
Arrange images, add notes, and draw on a canvas. Keep it above your art app. Window transparency and click-through controls are available on Windows and macOS; current Linux controls are limited.
File handling
A normal workspace reads your files where they are. Imports and copy actions can create new files.
